Valentine's Box Tutorial
-by Kelly Schirmer
Kelly turned a plain paper mache box into a very sweet Valentine's box. Vintage in style, and ready to fill with your favorite goodies.
Supplies used:
paper mache heart box
"You're a Jewel" stamp set, Pink Persimmon
Adirondack Paint Dabber by Ranger in "sandal"
Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint in "picket fence"
Tim Holtz Distress Ink in "tea dye"
Stazon Jet Black ink
White Opal Liquid Pearls
Sakura Gelly Roll Pen in "Clear Star"
Vintage Cream cardstock by Papertrey Ink
clear rhinestones
red/white wired gingham ribbon by Morex Inc.
sponge dauber
3-d foam squares by Scrapbook Adhesives
Tombo Mono Multi liquid glue
Step One: Paper mache box is from JoAnn's for $1.00! Paint base and lid with Adirondack Lights Paint Dabber in "Sandal" by Ranger. Note: I tried other Acrylic paints from local stores, but found that at the crackle step, the paint flaked off of the box. I have done 2 boxes with these Adirondack Dabbers, and the paint stays very well after adding the crackle layer.

Step Two: When "sandal" paint layer is completely dry, add a coat of Tim Holtz Crackle Paint in "Picket Fence" (white). Apply thick coat, as you will get more crackle.

|
 |
|
Step Three: The paint with crackle as it dries. I recommend letting it dry naturally, because if you try to "speed" the process with a heat gun, the paint will bubble up off of the box.

|
Step Four: Distress edges and seams of heart box with sponge dauber using Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Tea Dye.

Step Five: Stamp jewel from "You're a Jewel" stamp set in Stazon Jet Black ink on PaperTreyInk Vintage Cream Paper. Color in filagree portions with Sakura Gelly Roll pen in "Clear Star". Affix clear diamond rhinestone to center. Add White Opal Liquid Pearls to small circles at ends of jewel. Let dry, then cut out.

Step Six: Stamp sentiment on cream paper with Stazon Black (also on PaperTrey Ink Vintage Creme). Cut tab ends, and distress edge with Tea Dye ink. Glue left edge to the box so that the right side is "free". I used Tombo Mono Multi Liquid Glue.

|
 |
|
Step Seven: Tie wired gingham ribbon (mine if from Morex Corp.) around the box (just under where the lid fits). The wired ribbon worked well as it "hugged" the box. I tied my knot at the "top/center" of the heart. |
|
 |
|
Step Eight: Add 3-D foam squares to the back of the jewels. Affix jewels on lid as shown in a cluster of three. |

Here is the finished product! A perfect little hiding spot for a Valentine's Day gift! |
